A part of me aches to go back to Cuba.
I guess as a Latina, the ability to connect to my Hispanic roots has always been something that wrangles me inside. I didn’t realize this until I was sitting on the bus and staring out the window, anxious and nervous.
Walking around aimlessly, watching everyone from afar, I was afraid to get close. I was then getting approached with curiosity. The broken and hesitant spanglish came out of me, but they still understood me. All I could think about were my elders who I committed to always replying in English to, even though I knew what they were saying in Spanish. Slowly but surely, I began speaking with confidence. I began realizing that this small part of Latin America is a part of me too.
